Why do user layers make gameobjects disappear in the Fusion Projectiles sample project

Problem: changing the layer of a gameobject to anything but layers 0-2, 4-10 makes the gameobject invisible in the scene view

How to reproduce: download and open the Fusion Projectiles sample project. Create a new layer at index 11. Change a visible gameobject to that layer. The gameobject will disappear.

In this screenshot the ground is supposed to to be visible. Is this a bug? Please help.
