The tutorials have us building an .exe every time we want to test the client / server code. Is there a better option?

Nope, debug start is made to make this as easy as possible, having the editor act as the client or server and making X clients that all appear on different corners of the screen.5

Thanks, @stanchion . To clarify, what are you referring to when you say "debug start"? Sounds like you have possibly an easier step than saving the exe and running it manually.

in the Bolt Scenes menu there are buttons for each scene with options like Debug Start and Start as Server.5
