Ping interval during resend

Hi,
by default, the client sends a ping every 2 seconds when there's no events/operations sent between client and server.
but what happen if the ping needs to be resend due to instable network? does the next ping start 2 seconds later again even the previous ping is resending? or it will wait until the previous ping gets the ACK? Thanks
